Did you spill wine on your shirt, drop ice cream, or sit on the grass? You have about a minute to make your life significantly easier. This guide will tell you what to do immediately, which old wives' tales really work (and which ones will set the stain), and how to approach a stain based on what it is.

What to do in the first 60 seconds after spilling something on your shirt?

Blot the excess with a clean white cloth or paper towel — press, don't rub. Then rinse the stain with cold water from the back, so the dirt goes out of the fabric, not deeper in. Only then reach for any product.

Be careful of one distinction that's easily confused: do not rub means do not scrub the stain back and forth with a cloth. Working the product into the fabric with your fingers is different and acceptable — the point is not to rub fiber against fiber dry.

Why this way? The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute states it unequivocally: "The stain should never be rubbed because this can abrade or rip the fabric." Rubbing also pushes the dye into the core of the yarn, from which it is practically impossible to remove.

If you're in a restaurant and have nothing but a napkin and water, that's perfectly fine. Dilution and blotting within 60 seconds will do more to save your shirt than the best stain remover applied two days later.

Why does it matter what kind of stain it is?

Because each group of stains reacts to opposite conditions. A protein stain will set in hot water, while a grease stain will dissolve best in it. If you use the wrong method, you usually permanently set the stain instead of removing it.

Which old wives' tales for stains really work?

About half. Several folk remedies have solid chemistry behind them and are even used by museum textile conservators. Others are harmless but unnecessary, and a few will actively worsen the stain. Here's an overview with verdicts.

Bubbles do nothing, only dilution and speed work.
White wine on red wine Myth No chemical mechanism. White wine is 85% water — it just dilutes the stain and adds its own sugar and phenols, which will yellow over time.
Hairspray for pen Outdated It worked when hairsprays were ethanol-based. Leanne Stapf (The Cleaning Authority): "Many modern hairsprays no longer include alcohol, which means they won't lift the stain." Plus, you add a setting polymer.
Milk for ink Myth Casein in milk is a protein stain itself. You'll add a second stain to the ink, which will also yellow.

How to get red wine out of a shirt?

Red wine is a tannin and dye stain — the worst combination you'll find in your diet. The process has six steps, and it's crucial not to skip the last one.

  1. Blot the excess with a paper towel. Press, don't rub.
  2. Rinse with cold water from the back. Never hot.
  3. Spray with stain remover and let it sit for 1–2 minutes — Neflek Spray is designed for wine, coffee, chocolate, and fruit and works from 30 °C.
  4. Or soak for 15 minutes in a solution: 1 liter warm water + ½ teaspoon dish soap + 1 tablespoon white vinegar (University of Georgia Extension method).

Never use hot water, washing soda, or soap as the first step for wine. Alkalis set tannins — the National Cleaners Association states that a tannin stain "will become more difficult if it comes into contact with an alkali."

How to remove an ice cream stain?

Ice cream is a textbook combined stain: fat, milk protein, sugar, and often dye. The order of steps is more critical here than the choice of product. The most common mistake is to throw the shirt directly into a 60°C wash — this will set both casein and sugar.

  1. Scrape off solid residue with the blunt side of a knife.
  2. Rinse with cold water due to the milk protein. Hot water would set it.
  3. Fat: concentrated liquid detergent or gall soap directly on the stain, rub in with fingers, leave for 10–15 minutes.
  4. Protein: enzymatic pre-soak in lukewarm water up to 40 °C, at least 30 minutes, for dried stains even hours.
  5. Dye: if color remains after soaking, 3% hydrogen peroxide or oxygen bleach.
  6. Wash with the hottest water the fabric can tolerate and check before drying.

The last point is crucial for ice cream: sugar you don't see will caramelize and brown when heated. That's why children sometimes get a brown stain where there was nothing after washing.

How to deal with coffee, tea, and fruit?

All three are tannin stains and are treated with the same logic: cold water immediately, then an acidic environment, and only finally oxygen bleach. For fruit, there's one counterintuitive rule.

Coffee and tea: immediately rinse with cold water. Then soak for 15 minutes in a mixture of warm water + dish soap + white vinegar. Wash with oxygen bleach. Residues: percarbonate, soak 2–6 hours at 50–60 °C. Coffee with milk is a combined stain — first cold water and enzyme for the milk, only then the tannins.

Fruit and berries: University of Georgia Extension explicitly warns: "Do not use soap on fruit stains."do not use soap on fruit stains, alkali will set them. Rinse with cold water from the back generously, then soak in oxygen bleach. Don't be alarmed if the stain changes color from red to blue during treatment — anthocyanins are pH indicators, it doesn't mean it's spoiling.

How to remove grease and oil?

Grease is the only group of stains where you want heat. Heat reduces the viscosity of fat and increases the effectiveness of surfactants, which is why American university extension offices (UGA, Texas A&M) consistently recommend washing with the hottest water the fabric can tolerate according to its label.

  1. Wipe off excess — do not spread.
  2. For fresh stains, sprinkle an absorbent (cornstarch, baby powder, flour), a thick layer, leave for several hours or overnight, then shake off.
  3. Apply concentrated liquid detergent or degreaser directly to the stain and rub in with fingers. Leave for 10–30 minutes.
  4. Add washing soda to the wash. Sodina is dosed with one tablespoon into the detergent dispenser or pre-wash cycle and significantly increases degreasing power. Not suitable for wool and delicate garments.
  5. Wash with the hottest safe water and check before drying.

For vegetable oils, speed is critical for a different reason than for other stains: they oxidize. An initially invisible oil stain will yellow after weeks and become practically irremovable.

How to deal with blood, sweat, and yellow armpit stains?

Blood is the clearest case in the whole field: always cold water, never hot at any stage. For fresh blood, rinse with cold running water from the back and rub soap into the fabric. For dried blood, soak in cold water for at least 30 minutes, then enzymatically in lukewarm water. For residual shadows, drip a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide for 1–3 minutes. It will fizz — that's normal, catalase in the blood breaks down peroxide.

Yellow armpits are not caused by sweat itself. They form from the reaction of proteins in sweat with aluminum salts from antiperspirant and their gradual oxidation; therefore, they appear only after several washes. Procedure: pre-soak in warm water with oxygen bleach for 15–30 minutes, then wash. For residual yellowing, 3% peroxide for 15–20 minutes, even repeatedly. For old stains, white vinegar; for fresh stains, ammonia — but never combine with chlorine bleach and do not use on wool and silk.

White deodorant marks are a different problem — unwashed deposits of aluminum salts and waxes. Never iron them. Rub in undiluted dish soap, leave for 10–15 minutes, and wash; for white residue, use white vinegar for 15–30 minutes.

What water temperature is right for stains?

There isn't one correct temperature — there are two, and they are used for opposite types of stains. Protein stains require cold water; greasy stains require the hottest water the fabric can tolerate. If you're unsure, start with cold; you can't go wrong with that.

Why isn't your oxygen bleach working?

Almost always because you're adding it to a 30°C wash. Pure sodium percarbonate is practically not activated at 30°C — the threshold is 40°C, and full effect is achieved only between 50 and 60°C. Below this range, you're simply throwing money down the drain.

Percarbonate in water breaks down into sodium carbonate (washing soda) and hydrogen peroxide. The soda raises the pH to about 10.5, and in this alkaline environment, peroxide converts to the perhydroxyl anion, which oxidatively breaks down dyes. It's a self-optimizing system — it just needs heat.

Here's an interesting contradiction that's not often discussed: enzymes require 30–40°C, percarbonate 50–60°C. These two active ingredients of the same powder have incompatible optimal conditions. Quality detergents address this with a TAED activator, which forms peracetic acid with peroxide and bleaches at 30°C. However, separately purchased percarbonate does not have TAED — give it 60°C or a long soak.

What never to do when removing stains?

Most permanently ruined shirts fall victim not to the stain itself, but to what we did to it afterwards. Here are five mistakes that account for the vast majority of them — and one of them can send someone to the hospital.

  • Do not mix chlorine bleach (e.g., SAVO) with vinegar or glass cleaners. The combination of SAVO + acid releases chlorine gas, SAVO + ammonia releases chloramines. According to the Washington State Department of Health, this leads to respiratory irritation, shortness of breath, and in higher concentrations, pulmonary edema. This combination is dangerously widespread in Czech households because "both clean everything."
  • Do not rub. Dab from top to bottom onto an absorbent pad.
  • Do not tumble dry or iron until you are sure the stain is gone. Heat will set it permanently.
  • Do not combine products without rinsing. Texas A&M: if you need more than one product, rinse thoroughly between steps.
  • Do not treat wool and silk with enzymes, chlorine, or washing soda. They are protein fibers — enzymes cannot distinguish the stain from the fabric, and chlorine will literally dissolve them.

What to do if the stain is old or dried?

There's a chance, but it decreases with time and especially if the stain has gone through the dryer. The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute provides a practical guideline: “A stain less than two months old can be treated; a stain one-day-old is easier than one that is two-weeks old.”

For old stains, patience works better than force. Soak the item for several hours, ideally overnight, in lukewarm (not hot) water with detergent to loosen the top layer of the stain from the fibers. Then repeat the entire sequence for the specific type of stain — it typically requires five to seven repetitions, each removing only a part. And most importantly: do not let the laundry dry between attempts, as each drying partially sets the stain.

For oxidized residue, the last resort is an oxidizing bleach: percarbonate in water at 50–60 °C, soaked for 2–6 hours (the water will gradually cool, which is fine), or 3% hydrogen peroxide. For an expensive item, a dry cleaner is worthwhile — they have reducing agents and controlled mechanics that you don't have at home.

What if it ends up on the sofa or carpet?

For upholstery, the priority is the opposite of a T-shirt: most importantly, do not soak it. Water absorbed into the foam will pull dirt from the base back up as it dries, creating a ring worse than the original stain. Frequent Questions

Will white wine help with red wine?

No. There is no chemical mechanism — white wine is 85% water, so it only dilutes the stain. Plain cold water will do the exact same thing, for free and without the risk of adding more sugar and phenolic compounds to the fabric, which will yellow over time.

Can I wash the stain at 60 °C to be more sure?

For greasy stains, yes, but for protein stains, it's the worst possible step. Blood, milk, ice cream, eggs, and sweat denature and set into the fiber in hot water. If you don't know what kind of stain it is, wash with cold or lukewarm water and save hot water for a second attempt.

How long should I leave the stain remover on?

It depends on the type. A spray remover like Neflek only needs 1–2 minutes to work before washing and must not dry. Enzymatic pre-soaking needs at least 30 minutes, or hours for dried stains. Soaking in percarbonate for greyish white laundry takes 2–6 hours.

Why did the stain only appear after washing and ironing?

Can a stain be removed after a year?

What is safe for wool and silk?

Neutral or slightly acidic pH, no enzymes, no chlorine, no washing soda, and minimal mechanical action. Both wool and silk are protein fibers, so an enzymatic product will not distinguish between the stain and the fabric, and chlorine bleach will literally dissolve them. Wet wool is also mechanically weak — do not wring or rub it.
